Poster BannerBoth Of Charlotte's Infirmary Systems, Carolinas Health-Care System And Presbyterian Medical Care, And Some Of The Community Hospices Outside Mecklenburg County, Are Regularly Named To State 'Best' Lists For Varied Services.
Charlotte-area hospices compete for your business in many ways, as you can see from interstate highway poster advertisements that publicize both hi-tech and high-touch services.
Both of Charlotte's hospital systems, Carolinas HealthCare System and Presbyterian Health-care, and some of the community surgeries outside Mecklenburg County, are continually named to state "best" lists for diverse services.
Carolinas Hospital, the flagship of CHS, is the only infirmary in the area where doctors perform organ transplants - including hearts, kidneys, livers and pancreases.
At least ten area infirmaries have DaVinci androids for prostate, cardiac and bariatric surgery.
Around the region, maternity centers offer such comforts as Jacuzzi tubs to draw in expectant parents with lots of time to plan their birthing experiences.
For example, the six-year-old Birthplace at Gaston Memorial Infirmary, 30 miles east of Charlotte, features 1 or 2 walls of flowing water, landscaped yards and eccentric mobiles and sculpture.
The Birthplace has 53 rooms where mas and babies stay for their entire experience - work, delivery, recovery and post-partum (LDRP). The center also has one of the state's few neonatal intensive care units with personal rooms rather than one large nursery with rows of bassinets.
Pediatric care ratcheted up with the 2007 opening of Levine Children's Surgery at Carolinas Clinic. With 234 beds, it is the biggest children's surgery between Atlanta and Washington.
A nightly spectacle with its multicolored neon lights, the hospice has attracted pediatric consultants from all over the country.
Established relationships
Charlotte is the biggest town in the country without a four-year medical school, and our hospices may not have the reputes of, say, the Cleveland Clinic.
But in the last year, Carolinas HealthCare recruited one of the Cleveland Clinic's leading oncologists, Doctor. Derek Raghavan, to oversee its new Levine Cancer Institute.
And UNC Chapel Hill School of Medical latterly opened a branch campus at CMC, where twenty-two scholars now spend their third and fourth years of med school. That is as well as CMC's residency program, which has been training doctors for many years.
Many regionally trained doctors remain in Charlotte, practicing alongside those who have been recruited from somewhere else.
Anu Murthy, executive director for strategic business development at CaroMont Health in Gastonia, claimed she and her surgeon husband lived in Boston for 6 years during his training. Educational medication and research are way more commonplace there than in the Charlotte area, but that is not all bad, she revealed.
"Here you can build relationships with patients in a way that you can't in other centers. There's 'high-touch ' here that you don't see in bigger cities."
In Charlotte, you are apt to hear doctors and surgery directors declare that patients no longer have reason to travel for treatment.
Lots of docs to choose between
Despite worries about a state doctor shortage, the Charlotte region has lots - about 2,540 in Mecklenburg alone.
Many are employed by hospitals and listed on the hospice system sites. You can find doctors thru local medical societies or online search websites controlled by the American Medical Organisation or WebMD.
Health insurance plans regularly constrain your selections, so it's good to study the insurer's list of in-network health-care execs.
Remember, when you're looking for a doctor or other health-care provider, some of the finest information comes from mates and kin.
Once you have names, you check references with licensing boards for doctors, nurses, physician aides, dentists, chiropractic consultants, optometrists, psychological specialists, acupuncturists and massage therapists.
It's good to select a doctor while you're well rather than waiting until you are sick.
Consider which hospice a doctor uses and whether the doctor is board authorized or has experience treating your condition. You may also base your choice on the location of the doctor's office, the office hours and how long it takes to get a routine appointment.
If you are a recent arrival, you might ask for a suggestion from your previous doctor.
When I moved from Cincinnati 25 years back, my folks doctor suggested Doctor. David Citron, who I soon learned was one of Charlotte's most loved physicians.
By that time, he was no longer taking personal patients because he had become head of medical education at Carolinas Hospital, teaching the next generation of doctors.
Citron died in 2003, but many of his one off students still practice here and remember, as I do , that he set lofty standards for hospital treatment in Charlotte - a legacy that lives on,writes tagza.com.Signs, Posters, Banners, Even Printing on Lexan, in San Clemente CA
